Encaustic

Encaustic Painting is an ancient art form which dates back to the Greeko-Roman period around 500 A.D.. In Cairo it was used for funerary portraits that were attached to mummies of the deceased. Several of these portraits still exist today in remarkably good condition. It involves melting beeswax and damar tree resin with pigments to create the painting medium. This mixture has to be melted in order to paint it onto a wooden panel. Several very thin layers of wax create each work of art. Each layer must be melted to the previous layer in order to adhere. In Greek, encaustic translates as “to burn in”. Fire, torches and heat guns are used to fuse or “burn in” each layer as I paint. Encaustic painting is a labor intensive way of making art but its end product has a quality like no other medium.
